He completed his psychiatry residency in the Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Training Program and a fellowship in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. During his time in medical school, he was a Clendening Fellow in the Department of History and Philosophy of Medicine. His project focused on the role of the Orthodox Church in Byzantine health care. Dr. Lonergan has a passion for teaching and has presented on works as varied as “A Complicated Case of Acute Mania in Pregnancy” and “Skills-Based Psychotherapy Training for Inpatient Psychiatry Residents.” His eclectic clinical interests include both neuromodulation and dialectical behavioral therapy. Dr. Lonergan will be providing care to acutely ill patients on the Consultation/Liaison service in the Emergency Department and on the ECT service. Welcome Dr. Gregory Barron to Our Faculty Profile Dr. Gregory Barron received his B.A. in Biology at Bucknell University and his Doctor of Medicine degree at the UConn School of Medicine. In residency, Dr. Barron served with distinction as resident council president and most recently as the inpatient chief resident. Dr. Barron brings with him unique experiences and varied academic interests that will enrich our department. In particular, he has a passion for teaching, and as an alum of the medical school, he will bring his unique perspective on teaching medical students based on his experience. As a resident, Dr. Barron co-authored publications on “Gabapentin for Alcohol Use Disorder” and “Ethical and Logistical Considerations of Caring for Older Adults on Inpatient Psychiatry During the COVID-19 Pandemic.” Dr. Barron will be well positioned here at UConn as he cares for acutely ill patients in the Emergency Department, on the Consultation/Liaison service and on the ECT service. Welcome Dr. Judith Cooney to Our Faculty Profile Dr. Judith Cooney received her B.A. in Psychology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and earned her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Georgia. She completed a predoctoral internship at Brown University School of Medicine. Dr. Cooney began her tenure as a psychologist at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in Newington and was appointed assistant professor of Psychiatry (VAMC) at the UConn School of Medicine. She has since been promoted to associate professor. Dr. Cooney developed and served as director of several clinical programs, including the Substance Abuse Day Program, the Comprehensive Smoking Cessation Program, the Employee Smoking Cessation Program, and the Health Psychology Program. Dr. Cooney will primarily be providing health psychology services to patients and families in the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center and providing support services for Cancer Center clinical and support staff. Mindfulness Meditation Research evidence suggests that practicing simple meditations as provided in these 5-, 10- and 20-minute downloadable audio files can help patients manage anxiety, depression and other conditions.
